Description

General Purpose

The Bus Monitor is responsible to provide safety and customer service to all students to and from school. The Bus Monitor provides operational oversight, daily management, and assists the driver with the route. The Bus Monitor must be consistently on time and reliable to ensure the department is able to serve the students at all times.

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Attention to detail and schedules
  • Be knowledgeable in reading route sheets, following directions, and staying on time
  • Assist the driver with pre and post trip inspections before and after all trips
  • Must maintain safety, order and discipline aboard bus
  • Complete required reports
  • Operate 2-way radio in accordance with federal, local and state regulations
  • Other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director and/or Transportation Managers
  • Know the route and remain alert to monitor the welfare of students
  • Cooperate and communicate with school personnel, students, parents, and Transportation staff
  • Read and interpret materials, such as safety rules, routes, and procedure manuals

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

  • High School graduate/GED equivalent
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Possess good communications skills
  • Must pass the physical examination under requirements of IC 20-9-1, extensive criminal background, and complete PSM in the allotted time.
  • Complete 22 hours of training with the driver trainer or designated personnel
  • Attend all safety and training meetings
  • Demonstrate ability to open/close the service door and move up/down the steps on the bus
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate the lift, strap in wheelchairs, and fasten seatbelts
  • Must walk students across the street at bus stops
  • Good judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Obtain and keep current all required training and required certifications
  • Successful interview with Director of Transportation and/or Safety/Training Manager

Salary and Benefits

By contract, employees are hired as a substitute school bus monitor before being hired as a contracted school bus monitor with a permanent route, and benefits.

 

Payment Type:                  $12.05 per hour

 

Benefits:                           No benefits until placed in a permanent position
